From Hitchhiking to a Home

Yesterday our family vacation in Croatia came to an end. In the morning, the guys had to fly back to The Netherlands, we had to return the rental, and Casey had to go to the bank whose cash machine had eaten her debit card the night before. It was a slightly hectic final day for all of us, and the emotions carried on through to the final morning and moments.

After elongated, deep hugs and endless tears, kisses and well wishes, I finally walked away from the guys, and went to catch the bus back to Split. We had about 10 minutes to get out of our AirBnB by the time I got back, but our host understood, and all was well. Then, it was time for Casey and I to begin our hitchhiking adventure!

We’d decided to try and get as close to Slovenia as possible, or even reach it if we could. So we followed hitchwiki’s suggestions, and got to the toll road they recommend hitching from. When we arrived, we noticed there was another guy there trying to hitch to Zagreb, Croatia. We decided to plant ourselves a bit past him, and began to hold up our thumbs and signs. No more than 10 minutes had passed before a car with two young guys in it flipped a U-turn and paused long enough for me to shout, “SLOVENIA!?” to them. They said, “Zagreb,” I said, “Ok!” and that was that. So we called for the guy who’d been waiting for half an hour to come join us, and all set off to Zagreb together!

It wasn’t our intention to end up here, but when you score one lift that will take you over 4 hours and 400 kilometers, you don’t say no, especially if it is heading in the right-ish direction. And, it turned out so perfectly, because through our time in the car, we were actually offered a place to sleep in Zagreb for the night by the other hitcher that was waiting. We help him, he helps us. The way life should be all the time and not just on the road/traveling!

So, our powers of manifestation were on point, because earlier we’d decided we’d try to get a lift, who would offer us a place to sleep, and also feed us. All of which happened, and we enjoyed a delicious, huge dinner prepared by our new host! Instead of spending the night on the side of the road or at a gas station somewhere, we both scored comfy little beds to sleep in, in our own room, a nice introduction to Croatian music, and some new friends! It’s pretty amazing the things that happen to you when you just trust God and in other humans to take care of you and not harm you. Really, people are more good than bad, and they usually want to help others. It’s something of an instinct most of us have, I believe.

Everything turned out better than we could have hoped for, and we’re carrying that positive energy and thought into this new day of adventuring, too! Today we’re going to hitch up to Maribor, Slovenia, and then we don’t know what will happen. There’s a good chance I’m going to buy a flight to Amsterdam, as I’m not ready to accept that my time in Europe is dwindling quickly and I’m not spending it with Pim, but for now the idea is to rent a car in Slovenia for the week and continue sleeping in my hammock wherever I choose. I’ve no idea what’s actually going to happen. And it’s this freedom and uncertainty that keep my hooked on travel. Not knowing what is going to come, nor where I’m going to end up, but fully believing and knowing that it’s going to be awesome, wonderful, and fully blessed. Yes, God is good!

I’ll try to get up some posts about some of my new favorite countries (the ones I’ve been roaming around the last weeks), but it’ll depend on how much time I spend in places with WiFi, and forests and lakes, while they offer so much, don’t usually offer that. Which is of course a huge reason I love them so much. Let’s see what happens!

The adventure is on and rockin’!

Sending loads of Blessings, Love, Light & Wonder to you all! I hope you are having a happy feeling inside you, giving thanks for all that surrounds you, and sharing the love everywhere you go!

I love you, Family!!!

See you soon,

Allie-Sun <3
